What it is:

Grading is the process of leveling, shaping, and sculpting the earth to create a smooth, stable surface. It is the final step of dirt work before construction begins. We use heavy equipment like skid steers, dozers, and graders to move dirt exactly where it needs to be, following precise engineered plans.

Grading involves two main phases. Rough grading is the heavy lifting—moving large amounts of soil to create the general shape and elevation of the site. Fine grading is the precision work—smoothing the surface to exact tolerances so it is ready for a foundation, driveway, or landscaping.

Proper grading is the only way to ensure a site drains correctly. If water flows toward a building instead of away from it, it will eventually destroy the foundation. Grading also creates a stable, compacted base that prevents concrete slabs from cracking and structural walls from shifting over time.

Grading typically involves three main phases:

Moving large volumes of soil to establish the general shape, contours, and elevations of the site.

Shaping and compacting the native soil layer beneath the aggregate base to create a stable, uniform foundation.

Precision grading of the base course (aggregate), smoothing it to exact elevations and tolerances so it is ready for paving or concrete placement.
